- Sign up with email address at https://www.taxslayer.com/. You have to say “yes” to the “do you want email notifications?” question or it won’t work.
- Wait 1-24 hours. This is annoying.
- Get the taxslayer email and verify account with texted code texted (I used my own cell phone)
- Fill out all the stuff. There are lots of options to NOT do stuff (like uploading W2 forms, etc.).
- Need an email address
- You may need to help the person create a new email address. Proton Mail has a free, secure email you can sign up for.
- Need a cell phone number for the text code
- Use your own; I haven’t received any bad texts or other stuff as a result
- Need SSN
- Call 211 as your best bet
- Need income and tons of other info but most questions such I think the answer will be “no”
- You can click “no” or “not now” to the upload the income statement forms
- One possibility to get the money is have a check sent: Need an address to mail the check
- Ballard Food Bank (need ID to use mail service there)
- Orion Center (not sure how this works but lots of folks at Gilman use this spot)
- Mary’s Place (for female identifying folks only; not sure exactly how it works)
- Another possibility to get the money is to have money put on a prepaid Visa account
- Can buy one at Safeway and probably other spots
- Con: can have very high fees
- Other problems
I still want to explore sending people to a place like H&R Block. Someone at Gilman said they did it and the tax place deducts their fee from the stimulus funds. I think it’s probably predatory-level fees, but it’s also easy and legit.
